What is Medical Affairs?
Medical Affairs bridges the gap between life sciences organizations (e.g., pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, diagnostics) and the medical community, including healthcare practitioners, payers, researchers, and academics.
The primary responsibility of Medical Affairs professionals is to provide scientific and clinical information/support in the pre- and post-approval stage of a product and post-market launch.

There are several important roles in Medical Affairs. Senior-level roles include Medical Director, Medical Monitor, and Medical Affairs Manager.
Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs,) who largely make up a Medical Affairs team, communicate a product’s therapeutic purpose, use, and benefits to the medical community. They are responsible for establishing peer-to-peer relationships with key external stakeholders/key opinion leaders (KOL). The two-way dialogue and process allow MSLs to present novel clinical data and the KOL to provide critical feedback. Clinicians use the knowledge to make informed decisions about a particular product, including how it fits into the therapeutic landscape.
To work as an MSL, candidates should have a strong academic and medical science background, possess a high-level degree (e.g., PhD, MD, PharmD), and/or have significant experience as a healthcare/research professional.
